History of Cell Phones

Kelli Tibbits

Cell Phones are an essential part of life today. We find it hard to believe how people lived without them. They have everything on them, they are not just a simple phone. They have evolved to basically mini-computers in our pockets. Cell phones themselves changed everything for people but smart phones changed it all again. Growing up I remember teachers saying you won’t always have spell check or a calculator at hand, they said this to give us an incentive to learn what they were teaching. But the truth is we do have those things and a huge deal more at arm’s reach anywhere we go. Cell Phones are the one thing that most everyone can agree it’s the one thing you don’t leave home without. The first handheld mobile phone (cell phone) was created on April 3rd 1973 by Motorola.

Before 1973 phones where limited to being in people’s homes and cars (car phone). The very first cell phone was not only huge but only allowed for 30 minutes of talk time and 10 hours of recharging. Over the years cell phones got a lot smaller but it wasn’t until the 1990’s where the second generation as you could call them, came out. In 1993 the world’s first smartphone was created. It could not only call people but was also a pager, phone, and PDA. With the second generation came new technology, SMS/text messages where introduced, in 1999. In the mid-2000s the first real smartphone similar to what we know now was introduced with touchscreens. They have since gotten more and more useful and you can do just about everything you need with them.
